Our Program

About basic service access and quality improvement for communities

In our efforts to enhance the well-being of impoverished and marginalized communities in Indonesia, we prioritize access to and improvement of basic services. Through the Basic Service Access and Quality Improvement for Communities initiative, we strive to enhance accessibility and quality of essential services such as clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and education through participatory planning involving all segments of society, including women, vulnerable populations, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders. We engage in infrastructure rehabilitation and development, provide facilities and equipment, and enhance service providers’ capacities by leveraging local resources in terms of knowledge and funding, with external inputs filling gaps where local resources are unavailable. Our goal is to ensure that impoverished and marginalized communities have improved access and higher-quality services inclusively by optimizing existing local resources and fostering collaboration with various stakeholders to enhance their long-term quality of life and resilience.

Problem

Access to and quality of basic services such as clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and education are fundamental human rights that support sustainable development goals, especially in health, education, clean water, sanitation, and reducing inequalities. However, impoverished and marginalized communities in Indonesia still face barriers in accessing adequate basic services. Recent data shows that approximately 19.5% of the Indonesian population lacks access to safe drinking water, 51.4% lack access to proper sanitation, 9.4% lack access to basic healthcare services, and 4.3% lack access to primary education. These challenges include inadequate infrastructure, high costs, low awareness, and discrimination against women and vulnerable communities. The consequences can be severe, increasing the risk of diseases, malnutrition, and poverty. Studies also indicate that insufficient access to clean water and quality education can lead to a global disease burden and hinder human development.

What We Do?

In our efforts to improve the well-being of impoverished and marginalized communities in Indonesia, we concentrate on access to and enhancement of the quality of basic services. Through the Basic Service Access and Quality Improvement for Communities initiative, we engage in infrastructure improvements, provision of facilities, and capacity-building for service providers. We also encourage community participation in planning and implementation, utilizing local potential to achieve these goals. Our aim is to ensure that communities have better access and higher-quality services, with comprehensive collaboration across sectors and inclusivity, to enhance their quality of life and resilience in the long run.
