5 Strategies to Make Environmental Issues Go Viral Among Gen Z

Digital Climate Action,Knowledge Hub

Every second, interactions and changes are happening around us. However, many choose not to pay attention to these changes, including in terms of climate change, which is crucial for the future of the next generation. This may happen due to a gap in the dissemination of information about climate issues, which ultimately makes some people seem indifferent to this problem.

Environmental issues are actually urgent issues to be voiced, especially to young generations like Gen Z. But how can important messages about the environment reach and motivate Gen Z?

Here are 5 strategies that can be implemented:

1. Use Engaging and Easily Understandable Language

In fact, 79% of millennials and Gen Z check their smartphones 1 minute after waking up. So, the information they need must be understood in a relatively short time, even if the topic is not too close to their knowledge base. Unfortunately, most messages about the environment are often considered complex and boring. Therefore, to attract Gen Z’s attention, use simpler, more engaging, and easily understandable language. Avoid technical terms that are difficult to understand.

Example: Instead of saying “global temperature increase,” use “our earth is getting hotter.”

2. Optimize Engaging Audio-Visuals

Gen Z is more responsive to visual media such as images and videos. Use visually appealing and impactful content to convey environmental messages. Ensure that the visual content is relevant and easy to understand.

Example: Create interesting infographics about the impacts of global warming or short videos explaining ways to save the environment.

3. Be Active on Social Media

Gen Z spends a lot of time on social media. Utilize these platforms to spread information about the environment. Use relevant hashtags (#) and initiate discussions to broaden the dissemination of information. Provide information that suits the needs of each platform.

Example: Create interactive posts on Instagram with a short quiz about the environment.

4. Collaborate with Influencers

Collaborating with influencers or figures admired by Gen Z can help spread environmental messages. Choose influencers who have an interest or concern for the environment for more effective results.

Example: Invite influencers to be speakers in webinars about the environment.

5. Create Educational and Inspirational Content

Gen Z tends to like content that provides educational value and inspiration. Create content that not only provides information but also encourages real action in preserving the environment.

Example: Share inspirational stories about individuals or communities contributing to environmental conservation.

Through the implementation of these strategies, it is hoped that messages about the environment can be more easily accepted and go viral among Millennials and Gen Z, so that more people care and take action to protect our planet.
